The Zapotec culture, through muxheidad, includes homosexuality, gayness and same-sex marriage with certain contradictions: A muxhe is a man who assumes affective, emotional and sexual roles that are culturally reserved for women. The muxheidad is simultaneously a veiled social acceptance, and a celebration of what is still considered a transgression.

“La historia oficial nos invita a visitar un museo de momias. Así, no hay peligro: se puede estudiar a los indios que murieron hace siglos y a la vez se puede despreciar o ignorar a los indios que viven ahora” (Eduardo Galeano, 2011).
“Esos desdichados salvajes tienen la talla escasa, el rostro repugnante y cubierto de pintura blanca, la piel sucia y grasienta, los cabellos enmarañados, la voz discordante y los gestos violentos. Cuando se ve a tales hombres, apenas se puede creer que sean seres humanos, habitantes del mismo mundo que nosotros. A menudo se pregunta uno qué atractivos puede ofrecer la vida a algunos animales inferiores; ¡la misma pregunta podría hacerse, y aún con mayor razón, respecto a tales salvajes!” (Darwin, 1845).

‘RepresentaXión’ de un muxe: la identidad performática de Lukas Avendaño
“Lukas Avendaño is an emerging Mexican performance artist whose recent work constitutes a queer performatic intervention of Mexican nationalistic representations, particularly that of Zapotec Tehuana women. Avendaño embodies the complex identity of muxes, or male homosexuals from the Tehuantepec Isthmus where he was born. His cross-dressing performance interweaves ritual dances with autobiographical passages and actions that involve audience members, in order to challenge the widely held view of a gay-friendly indigenous culture and point towards the existence of lives that negotiate pain and loneliness with self-affirming pride. The article concludes with a theoretical argument around the way Avendaño’s work queers the very concept of representation, placing it under erasure to point towards the possibility of ‘representaXión’, a word which suggests a sensual, disidentificatory and body-based kind of performance.” Antonio Prieto Stambaugh
